Vepris nobilis, commonly known as the African Sandalwood or Umhlungulu, is a species of tree native to southern Africa, particularly found in countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Belonging to the Rutaceae family, it is highly valued for its aromatic wood, which resembles the scent of sandalwood, hence its common name.

This evergreen tree can grow up to 15 meters tall and has a dense, rounded canopy with glossy green foliage. Its leaves are compound, consisting of several pairs of leaflets, and emit a pleasant fragrance when crushed. The bark of the Vepris nobilis tree is dark brown and deeply fissured.

In addition to its aromatic wood, Vepris nobilis is also known for its traditional medicinal uses. Various parts of the tree, including the bark, leaves, and roots, are utilized in African traditional medicine to treat ailments such as stomach complaints, fever, and respiratory issues. Additionally, the tree’s wood is valued for its insect-repellent properties and is used in making furniture, carvings, and traditional African instruments.

Due to overexploitation and habitat loss, Vepris nobilis populations are declining in some regions. Efforts are underway to conserve this species and promote sustainable harvesting practices to ensure its continued existence in the wild.
