Warburgia ugandensis, commonly known as the East African Greenheart or Ugandan Greenheart, is a species of tree native to East Africa, particularly found in countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Belonging to the Canellaceae family, it is a large evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall and has a straight trunk with a dense, rounded crown.

The Warburgia ugandensis tree is highly valued for its aromatic and durable wood, which is known as “greenheart” due to its greenish color when freshly cut. The wood is resistant to decay and is prized for use in construction, furniture making, and carving. Additionally, various parts of the tree, including the bark and leaves, have medicinal properties and are used in traditional African medicine to treat a range of ailments, including malaria, stomach disorders, and respiratory infections.

Due to its economic and cultural significance, Warburgia ugandensis is facing threats from overexploitation and habitat loss. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species and promote sustainable harvesting practices. Additionally, the tree is being cultivated in agroforestry systems and botanical gardens to ensure its continued existence for future generations.
